Speech Key turns your voice into text on your Mac. Here is everything it does with your words.
Last updated October 20, 2026
Your voice
Speech is turned into text on your Mac. Audio is never saved and never sent anywhere.
Your text history
Speech Key keeps a text history of your dictations, and of any fixes you make, in ~/Library/Application Support/SpeechKey on your Mac. It is never uploaded.
Meetings
Meeting mode writes transcript files only when you take a snapshot, into a folder you choose (by default Documents/Speech Key Meetings). Audio is never saved.
Talk to Agent
When you hold ⇧ + to talk to the agent, Apple's on-device model reads what you said. That stays on your Mac too.
The internet
The only time Speech Key uses the internet is on first launch, when it downloads its speech models (about 0.5 GB) from Hugging Face. After that it works offline.
What Speech Key doesn't do
No account, no analytics, no tracking, no ads. Nothing is shared with anyone. If you send a transcript to Claude or anywhere else, that's you sending it.
